A Porcupine's Giant Pumpkin Snack Is the Cutest Thing You'll See Today

A Porcupine's Giant Pumpkin Snack Is the Cutest Thing You'll See Today

I’ve always thought porcupines look like they’re having a slightly difficult hair day. All those quills, those tiny hands, and an expression that suggests they’d prefer everyone keep a respectful distance. Then you watch one enjoy a snack, and suddenly its intimidating reputation becomes hard to take seriously.

Cincinnati Zoo’s pumpkin video captures that exact moment. A porcupine gets to enjoy some seasonal produce, and the contrast between the little animal and its oversized orange snack is enough to make an ordinary lunch break look rather extravagant.

Cincinnati Zoo has previously shared footage of Rico, its Brazilian prehensile-tailed porcupine, enjoying a Halloween pumpkin. In 2022 coverage, Rico can be seen happily working his way through the seasonal treat.

Brazilian porcupines also have prehensile tails, which help them move through trees and grasp branches. They’re skilled climbers, though navigating a rainforest canopy doesn’t necessarily translate into elegant dining.

The appeal is pretty straightforward. Porcupines aren’t exactly known for their table manners in the human sense, but their little paws and deliberate eating habits make them surprisingly entertaining to watch.

A Very Serious Appointment With a Pumpkin

At zoos, food can serve several purposes beyond nutrition. Keepers may use suitable produce in enrichment activities to encourage animals to explore new textures, investigate their surroundings and engage in natural behaviors.

While pumpkin is a familiar fall treat for humans, certain zoo animals can enjoy it as part of a managed diet. That doesn’t mean every animal should receive whatever happens to be sitting on someone’s porch.

The Pumpkin Is Clearly the Main Course

Rico has built a strong following through Cincinnati Zoo’s animal content, and it’s easy to see why. His small movements and enthusiasm for food make even an ordinary snack worth watching.

I imagine there’s something to be said for approaching lunch with that level of focus. No phone, no multitasking, no pretending you’ll only have one bite.

Just you and a pumpkin that will require some commitment.
