Warm, Sweet, and Cozy: 6 Dog Breeds That Match Your Favorite Fall LatteBeth

Pumpkin spice season is in full swing. If you adore all things cozy season, you might naturally want a companion that fits that bill year-round. After all, some dog breeds are pure pumpkin spice and everything nice. In other words, these are some of the sweetest dog breeds that are known for their gentle temperaments that exude warm, autumn-day vibes. They’re friendly, affectionate dog breeds for families with hearts of gold who make everyone around them feel cozy as a PSL and a soft blanket combined.

“Whether it’s the middle of summer or snowing outside, a dog is going to want to seek comfort and affection from their person, which is sure to bring that warm and content feeling we all associate with getting cozy in autumn,” says Annie-Mae Levy, CFBA, professional dog trainer at Woofz by nove8.

Wondering if your favorite pup made the cut or if a dog you’re dreaming of adopting falls into this category? Below, Levy reveals six dog breeds that are pumpkin spice and everything nice in this dog breed temperament guide.

If pumpkin spice was a dog, it would be a Beagle coming inside after a brisk walk in the autumn leaves. Levy points out that Beagles live for long, good sniffs outdoors through the leaves. But that doesn’t mean they want to leave you in the dust—Beagles also live for what happens when the two of you return from your adventure.

“Once they’re done, these friendly and affectionate hounds are sure to want to come in and cuddle up with you under a blanket, as they love being involved in family life,” Levy gushes.

You may be able to get away with at least one fewer throw from HomeGoods or Target if you have a Beagle in your family, then.

Think of the Maltese as the whipped cream dollop on top of your pumpkin spice latte—tiny, impossibly sweet, and pure autumn comfort. These pups are playful and truly love their people, making them prime gentle lap dogs and companions who adore curling up beside you, according to Levy.

“These dogs are the equivalent of a tiny, soft blanket that wants to follow you around the home,” Levy shares.

Don’t let their giant size fool you: Newfoundlands embody the ultimate ‘cozy blanket’ energy of the fall season. However, just be aware that you’ll need to be cool with a little (OK, a lot) of drool and a lot of dog if you have one of these furbabies. After all, these gentle giants can weigh up to 150 pounds. However, their large size just means there is more of them to love.

“The sweet, easy-going nature of a Newfoundland could not be more autumn-themed,” Levy raves. “These guys have such a sweet-looking face that just makes you want to grab them for a cuddle, and luckily they have the laid-back temperament to match.”

With a coat that looks like glowing autumn foliage, the Irish Setter literally dresses the part for cozy season. In fact, no breed looks the part of “fall” better than an Irish Setter. Their red coats are like fall foliage or pumpkins in fur form, so they’ll match fall decor and fallen leaves. Besides being pretty, they are also affectionate, including with small kids, and totally willing to assume the role of blanket.

“Don’t let their good looks fool you, though,” Levy says. “While the Setter can be a perfect cuddle companion, they need a ton of exercise first.”

Breed Stats

Personality: Active, sweet-natured, outgoing

Height: 25-27 inches

Weight: 60-70 pounds

Lifespan: 12-15 years

Border Collie

For anyone whose idea of pumpkin spice season involves a brisk hike in the autumn air before curling up by the fire, the Border Collie is the ultimate fall buddy. Border Collies are the kind of dogs you’ll want to walk throughout the fall—and in all seasons. Levy shares that they need lots of physical and mental stimulation to get to the point where they’re ready to chill and cuddle.

“I’d argue there is nothing more satisfying than having them contentedly snoozing at your feet in the evenings,” Levy says. “If a cozy fall day looks like lots of time spent outdoors with some well-earned sofa time in the evening, then these guys might be your cup of tea—or pumpkin spice latte!”

Plus, their desire for adventures can help you appreciate how the weather and views in your own hometown change over time (and resist cabin fever).

Breed Stats

Personality: Energetic, affectionate, smart

Height: 18-22 inches

Weight: 30-55 pounds

Lifespan: 12–15 years

If your idea of ‘pumpkin spice and everything nice’ involves a personal lap warmer, the Shih Tzu is a top contender. After all, Levy points out that Shih Tzus are also bred mostly for companionship. You’ll notice that this small dog breed has a strong desire to spend lots of time near you (preferably on your lap).

“This, combined with their happy-go-lucky disposition and willingness to get involved in pretty much whatever their family is doing that day, can bring that warm, cozy feeling that we all associate with the perfect fall day,” Levy says.

Breed Stats

Personality: Playful, affectionate, outgoing

Height: 9–10.5 inches

Weight: 9–16 pounds

Lifespan: 10–18 years
