Matthew Towers Black Doves , the sleek and sexy Netflix series about the complicated friendship between a spy played by Keira Knightley and an assassin played by Ben Whishaw, has returned for season 2. Already caught up? Not sure whether the long-term commitment is worth it? Here’s what we know about the odds that Black Doves will be renewed for season 3.
The first season brought Knightley’s character Helen, a spy married to a prominent conservative politician, back into action in the aftermath of her lover’s murder. The second season shoves her into the spotlight as her husband becomes prime minister. Meanwhile, in both seasons, Whishaw’s character Sam does his best to protect her while fighting his own demons, internally and externally. As various secret organizations and powers that be pull their strings to use them as pawns, the two of them can really only trust each other.
As of the season 2 release, Black Doves has not yet been renewed for season 3. The second season was announced before the first season dropped on Netflix. In theory, that’s concerning. But maybe the show was initially “ordered” for two seasons, and they announced it as an early renewal to create some well-deserved buzz before the premiere.
So far, season 2 reviews have been good. If the audiences follow, then we should (hopefully) get the good news soon.
No spoilers, but season 2 leaves a lot up in the air. Many of the characters are split up. Big secrets have been revealed. I wouldn’t be surprised if a third season went international again. Every story about a spy and/or assassin teaches us that you can’t escape your past.
However, since Black Doves is not based on a preexisting book series or film, it is difficult to decipher what happens next. That’s up to creator Joe Barton, who of course also created The Lazarus Project and recently adapted the play Amadeus to the small screen.
This is the thing. There were two years between Black Doves season 1 and season 2. That’s the problem with getting big movie stars to make television shows. Scheduling can be difficult.
But are we really going to have to wait until 2028 for Black Doves season 3? That would not be ideal. With all of the twists and turns of a show like this, you’ll need to do a total preseason series rewatch to remember what happened. If it is 2028, it’ll probably drop in November or December. That’s the one thing you can count on...this is a chilly series.
